Treadmill Testing

Los Angeles CardiologistWhat Does Treadmill Testing Show?

Treadmill testing can offer an abundance of information to a doctor who knows how to read and understand what is being recorded. Treadmill tests can consist of varying the speed of a person's walk, the incline or grade of the slope they are walking, and the distance. For some people, it is important to find out how far they can walk with minimal exertion (or little to no grade). For others who are in better shape, the speed and grade can be varied to help give a more accurate view of what their cardiovascular system is truly capable of. People who respond well to treadmill testing may be allowed to return to daily activities sooner than expected.

How is it Used in Diagnosis Possible Heart Problems?

Treadmill tests are often used to record both speed and distance. This can show a doctor how strong a person's heart muscle is under different types of conditions. If a person is in excellent shape, the grade or slope of the treadmill can be used to identify potential problems in both circulation and heart rate. While any type of physical activity can be used to help detect possible heart problems, treadmills are a good choice because they can be closely monitored and various settings can be used to fine tune the exercise and create different levels of activity. Treadmills are easy to use and patients can use them in the comfort of their own home. If a patient responds well to the use of a treadmill during a stress test, doctors may encourage them to use one as part of their regular exercise routine.

When is it Used?

Treadmill testing can be used for stress tests as well as to check a person's progress if they are recovering from a heart attack or stroke. As their condition begins to improve, the treadmill can be adjusted so more intense levels of activity can be performed in a controlled environment. This will give the doctor an accurate idea of how well the person is regaining their strength and moving forward during the healing process. As they regain more and more strength, their level of activity is increased until they have reached or exceeded their prior state of health.
